Ask Ted 84: The Ideal Time To Go To Sleep And Why Some People Need Less Sleep Than Others

Ask Ted Question:

“Hello Ted, I just heard the podcast where you interview Dr. Parsley. It is super interesting what he had to say about sleeping. One question: at what time should I go to bed? This was not mentioned and I was curious. I thought it was ideal to sleep at night time. For example, go to bed at 9:30pm and then wake up at 5:30am or go to bed at 10:30pm then wake up at 6:30am as opposed to going to bed at 4:00am then waking up at 12:00pm. Does the time matter or is it ok as long as I get 8 hours of sleep, it doesn’t matter when exactly? What would you say is the ideal timing?

Thanks a lot,

Isabel”

In this episode of Ask Ted, I answer Isabel’s question and delve deeper into understanding sleep so we can make better decisions about how to improve our sleep architecture (i.e. sleep quality).

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • What sleep cycles are and why it matters to what time to sleep
  • The difference between non-REM and REM sleep
  • Diurnal versus nocturnal
  • What circadian rhythms are and how they affect sleep
  • Why some people can get away with less sleep than others
  • What the ideal time to sleep is
  • Why self-experimentation with sleep is the best way to optimize it
