Read time: 5 minutes

Welcome to Unstoppable After 40, my weekly newsletter where I reveal cutting-edge tips to get fit in your 40s & 50s while growing your business or career.

What’s in store for today:

  • Is HIIT dangerous for people with heart disease?
  • Adding this simple food can lengthen your life, a new study says.
  • My favorite post-workout exercise to relieve tension in the neck and shoulders.

Today’s issue is brought to you by Unstoppable After 40 Coaching Program. We help entrepreneurs, executives, and business owners to get fit in their 40s & 50s while growing their businesses and enjoying their lifestyles. (In less than 2 hours per week) .

I learned a big lesson recently.

Yes, I’ve been in the health & fitness biz for over 25 years now. But I’m still learning!

On a recent call with an entrepreneur client, I asked him what he thought was the biggest lesson he’s learned in 4 months of working together.

He said two things:

  1. Fast feedback.
  2. There’s no perfect time.

Here’s what he meant…

He said that whenever he would hit a plateau with weight loss, he’d get frustrated and give up. But now we talk every week. We assess his results and if something isn’t going in the right direction we come up with a solution.

As a result of this fast feedback, he’s lost over 10lbs while being in the middle of the busiest time in his life.

While this number is on the low side for us, he’s got unusual circumstances.

He’s taken a month-long trip to Japan over the holidays.

He’s about to “go big” with his company.

He and his wife are about to have a baby.

He told me:

“My life is crazy right now. But it’ll slow down. If I can lose weight now, I can’t wait to see what I can accomplish when things slow down.”

The lesson is this:

If you can’t get in shape while your life is busy, then you have no chance of staying in shape.

Because life will always throw you curve balls.

Travel.

Holidays.

Children.

But when you make a commitment to do it no matter what, that’s when the true transformation happens.

And this is a weight loss chart from a busy entrepreneur trying to get in shape while growing his business. It’s not what you see on the internet.

Here is your Unstoppable After 40 Friday Digest:

1. Is HIIT Dangerous for People with Heart Disease?

I was recently asked by a subscriber about HIIT being safe for those with heart disease.

First of all, I appreciate the trust someone would have to ask me this.

While I’m not a doctor, what I can do is look at what the research says about this.

In fact, that’s exactly what I did for a recent podcast.

The short answer is that if you have stable heart disease, 6 months of HIIT training was found to shrink the blockage according to this 2023 study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.

However, that isn’t the whole story. There are things you need to watch out for when it comes to HIIT training if you have heart disease. And I go into all the details in this Ask Ted episode.

2. Adding this food to your diet can lengthen your life, a new study says.

Multiple studies have found that eating mushrooms = longer life.

Mushrooms are rich sources of antioxidants like glutathione and ergothioneine (ET). These powerful substances play a significant role in preventing chronic disease.

While glutathione is made in your body, we only get ET through our diet. In fact, research has found that mushrooms contain the highest ET levels of any food.

Cells lacking ET are more susceptible to oxidative stress.

This is bad.

The good news is that you don’t have to eat them every day because ET builds up in your body.

Golden oysters, oysters, shitake, and porcini were found in the highest amounts.

So have a few servings of mushrooms per week to get this important antioxidant in your diet!

3. My favorite exercise to relieve tension in the neck and shoulders

Do you spend too much time seated at your desk? And do you want a stronger back?

Then give Cable X-rows a try.

They’re a unique back exercise that will strengthen the upper back muscles.

And it feels great to do – especially if your neck and shoulders feel a bit tight.

Try 2-3 sets of 10-20 reps at the end of your workouts.

Give it a try.

Quote of the week:

“When You Feel Like Quitting, Remember Why You Started.”

It doesn’t matter how strong, tough, intelligent, or positive you are. There will be days you are tempted to quit.

The difference in the successful is they are the few that don’t.

This is why knowing your core why is so important upfront. Remind yourself of it daily. Pivot, change tactics, get help, take a break, just don’t quit.
